Update on COVID-19 Vaccine and Information on Virginia’s Phase 1c

January 29, 2021

As the COVID-19 vaccine continues to become available through the District, Maryland and Virginia, its availability to most of us is still extremely limited according to the priorities set generally by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and more specifically, by states and counties. We strongly encourage you, in consultation with your health care provider, to immediately accept the vaccine as soon as it is offered to you or becomes available to you.

At this time, GW has not been allocated doses of the vaccine for our university community. The vaccine available at GW Hospital and the Medical Faculty Associates (MFA) is being administered per D.C. Health guidelines only. Vaccinations also are being provided to a subset of MFA patients who meet D.C. criteria. Residents in the District, Maryland and Virginia are encouraged to monitor local availability

We have received many inquiries from individuals who live and work in Virginia regarding Phase 1c of the Virginia Department of Health’s COVID-19 vaccination response. In Virginia’s Phase 1c, essential employees at institutions of higher education are eligible to receive the vaccine. Under this guidance, the university has determined that faculty and staff in the spring on-campus cohort are considered the institution’s essential employees. GW is working with appropriate local health departments and will continue to comply with specific counties’ guidelines. The list of faculty and staff in the spring on-campus cohort will be submitted to Virginia counties as requested by public health agencies.

At this time, while some students may be on state prioritization lists based on age, employment and/or chronic health conditions, they have not been included by government agencies as being among Phase 1 and Phase 2 populations, and we are not expecting to receive requests for information about our students.

We will continue to provide updates to the university community as information becomes available.
