GW has now submitted for review our Back to Campus plan to the District of Columbia. Our first priority, in this plan and through all of our efforts, is on the measures we will undertake for the health and safety of the GW community, in alignment with guidance from the D.C. government and other health authorities.

Interim Faculty Guidance

GW will employ a range of safety protocols to ensure that faculty teaching in-person will return to a safe working environment. At the same time, part of the planning should include preparation by faculty to deliver course content remotely should it become necessary.

Fall Planning Update

We plan to begin in-person instruction for most students on Aug. 31. Assuming this remains so, we have now determined that after Thanksgiving break, classes for most students will move to remote instruction until the end of the semester.

Federal CARES Act Funding for Students

May 26, 2020
GW has been allocated approximately $9.1 million from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF), which includes a requirement that at least half of this funding be distributed directly to students as emergency aid for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations during the pandemic. While universities may use the other half of the funding for institutional purposes, we will distribute all $9.1 million directly to students.

GW is closely monitoring the recommendations being made to Mayor Bowser regarding the stages to resume activities throughout the District of Columbia. The specific timeline of each stage is not known at this time and the plan is subject to change as guidelines and protocols are decided.

Updates to GW’s International Travel Policy

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff, As we continue to monitor the situation and based on guidance from our public health experts, we have determined that it is necessary to continue the suspension of all non-essential international travel until further notice.

Mask Guidelines

GW wants to reiterate to all employees and contractors that masks are required to be worn on campus when you are in public spaces, in our buildings, and walking around campus. When there is a possibility that you may encounter other people, you need to be wearing a mask or have your face covered.

A Message from Scott Burnotes: On May 13, 2020, Mayor Muriel Bowser extended the “stay-at-home” order for District of Columbia residents until June 8, 2020. Residents are ordered to continue to avoid all non-essential travel in D.C.
