Please note the content in this message has been updated:
The deadline to request a vaccine exemption has been changed to June 7, 2021.
To: Members of the GW Community
We continue our work this summer to get our campuses ready to welcome back students, faculty and staff in-person for the 2021-2022 academic year. As you are aware, GW requires all members of our community who will be in GW buildings daily or intermittently during the academic year to be fully vaccinated with a U.S. FDA- or World Health Organization-approved COVID-19 vaccine. Information on how to get a vaccine can be found on our website.
Although it’s only May, we have a few short months before our fall semester begins. In this email, we share reminders and new information to help prepare for an in-person return to campus.
Important Dates to Remember for Compliance with GW’s Vaccine Requirement
Once you have received the full series of a COVID-19 vaccine, we urge you to upload your documentation to the medical portal as soon as possible. Your documentation is verified manually and may take up to a week to register in the system due to the volume of submissions.
Your vaccine documentation must be uploaded in the medical portal by August 1 so that your campus access is available by the start of fall semester. If you miss this deadline, your access to campus will be affected. Instructions on how to upload your documentation are available online.
To meet the August 1 deadline for vaccine documentation submission, the following dates can help guide your process.
All vaccine exemption requests are due to Occupational Health (faculty and staff) or the Colonial Health Center (students).
If you are receiving the Moderna vaccine, the series should be started by this date. This gives you time to receive two full doses (28 days apart) and allow two weeks following the second dose to be considered fully vaccinated. This timeframe will allow you to submit your documentation by August 1.
If you are receiving the Pfizer vaccine, the series should be started by this date. This gives you time to receive two full doses (21 days apart) and allow two weeks following the second dose to be considered fully vaccinated. This timeframe will allow you to submit your documentation by August 1.
If you are receiving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, you should receive it by this date and allow two weeks to be considered fully vaccinated. This timeframe will allow you to submit your documentation by August 1.
|Vaccine documentation must be submitted to the medical portal.|
Requests for Exemption from Receiving the COVID-19 Vaccine
We will grant limited exemptions, such as for medical or religious reasons. Your exemption request must be received by June 1, 2021.
Faculty and staff who wish to request an exemption should complete the exemption form and submit it through the medical portal. Instructions are available online. For questions, contact GW Occupational Health at 202-677-6230 or [email protected].
Students seeking exemption from any of the immunization requirements for medical or religious reasons must submit:
- A letter from a medical clinician or religious clergy stating the reason for a need for exemption.
- Upload your documents to the medical portal.
For questions, please email the Colonial Health Center at [email protected].
Access to Campus Following Verification
If you have not had campus access throughout the pandemic, you may be able to access campus as early as June, if:
You are fully vaccinated, and
- Your documentation has been verified.
To confirm that your verification is complete, log into the medical portal. Under “Medical Clearances,” your status will be marked “Compliant” with a green check mark if your documentation has been verified and approved. Please confirm with your supervisor that you have support to access campus and the date that you can return to your work location.
Once your verification is complete, you are required to participate in monthly COVID-19 testing through GW. You must make an appointment online through the medical portal. COVID-19 testing is available at both the Foggy Bottom and the Virginia Science and Technology campuses. Summer 2021 hours of operation are available online.
Your GWorld card access will be activated after you receive your first COVID-19 test.
Members of the current on-campus cohort may access campus as they normally would.

Again, we strongly encourage you to upload your vaccine documentation as soon as you can. We will continue to provide information and reminders throughout the summer.
