In order to protect the health and safety of GW students, faculty, and staff, the university is restricting access to all campus facilities for the 2020-21 academic year. This means that some of the broader GW community members are no longer be able to use certain facilities they previously had access to. It also means that students are asked not to bring guests into certain areas.
The significant changes to access on campus include:
- All buildings are restricted 24/7 and require an authorized GWorld card for entry. Only students, faculty and staff approved to be on campus will have access to buildings. Requests for exceptions must be approved by the Division of Safety & Facilities. Requests based on accessibility should be submitted to Disability Support Services.
- GWorld “All Tap” access, allowing students universal access to residential facilities, will be turned off. Residential students will be allowed access only to their assigned residence hall.

Get Your GWorld Card
The GWorld office is currently issuing GWorld cards to new students, faculty and staff on an as needed basis. GWorld cards are required for all students, faculty, and staff participating in on campus activities (e.g., in-person instruction, residing on campus or designated onsite employees). All GWorld cards are issued in person at either the Foggy Bottom Campus or Virginia Science and Technology Campus.
Upload Your GWorld Photo
You must upload your photo online to receive a GWorld card. Eligible new students, faculty and staff are sent a custom photo upload link from the GWorld office via email. This link takes you to a site to upload a photo for your GWorld, as well as a U.S. government ID to confirm your identity. Specific photo requirements are listed on the link. You will receive instant feedback on your photo and will later receive an email from the GWorld office when your photo is approved or rejected. The GWorld office uses this photo and your information to print your GWorld card. If you did not receive the link to upload your photo, please contact the GWorld office at 202-994-1795 or [email protected] for assistance.
Pick Up Your GWorld for Students
New students living in residence halls will receive their card when they move in. Students participating in an in-person orientation session will receive their card at that event. Students living in the D.C. metro area can contact the GWorld office to request their card.
Pick Up Your GWorld for Employees
After your GWorld photo is approved, the GWorld office will contact you with specific pick-up instructions.
