Guidance on Remote Work

March 16 update: In a letter to the GW community, President Thomas LeBlanc announced current telework requirements for GW employees and guidance for designated on-site employees will remain in place until at least April 5. The university will provide additional updates as soon as possible.


Dear GW Community,

I want to begin by expressing gratitude to everyone at GW who has worked tirelessly in these times of uncertainty to keep our community safe. These past few weeks have been filled with examples of members of our community (from all backgrounds, levels, and positions) rising to the challenges of dealing with COVID-19 and demonstrating an abundance of care for each other. You are what makes GW the special place that it is. I thank you for your support.

As President LeBlanc announced on March 10, we will move our classroom learning online from March 23 through April 5, following spring break. Our university is now and will remain open and operational. However, effective Monday, March 16, 2020, in an effort to promote social distancing, we are requiring all employees whose jobs can be performed remotely to telework.  All employees will continue to be paid during the interim period.

This will affect our employees in three different ways:

  • Units with designated on-site employees including Student Affairs, Student Health Services, Facilities, Safety & Security, University Police, and Transportation among others will have employees who remain on campus to provide essential services throughout the referenced period. Free parking on campus will be available for designated on-site employees to help promote social distancing during your commute. Please speak to your supervisor about your responsibility.
  • There are employees whose jobs lend themselves to teleworking. We are requiring those employees to telework. Use the Telecommuting Assessment and Agreement for COVID-19 (PDF) as a guide to determine the most successful way to establish a teleworking arrangement. (It is unnecessary to complete the form before March 16.)
  • Employees whose jobs cannot be performed with telework should nonetheless remain at home. These employees may be assigned new duties that can be completed remotely.

This guidance does not pertain to student employees.

Several resources have been created to give guidance on how best to prepare and plan for the continuity of operations. Our GW COVID-19 website continues to serve as our primary repository for updating our community, and we ask that you continue to monitor it as this situation evolves. Please talk to your supervisor or your HRMD client partner if you are unsure of your status.

Challenges like this serve as a reminder to us that it is not our offices and systems that create community, but our people. Although the ways that collaboration occurs may shift as we determine how to prioritize safety in our day-to-day lives, we are still united in the strength and support that we provide to each other across the university. We appreciate your patience and your partnership as we navigate the safest and most appropriate path forward.
